This climb ranks right up there with the most famous mountain stages of the Tour de France and has appeared as a stage in the TdF more than any other climb.  It is classified as HC or hors categorie by the TdF due to its difficulty.  The views of the Pyrenees are quite breathtaking and make the effort of the climb worthwhile.  This climb was introduced to the TdF in 1910 and has been featured in a stage over 80 times.  Also, in 2023 the TdF Femmes featured the Tourmalet.  One of the most famous stories of the TdF involves the Tourmalet.  In 1913, Eugene Christophe was leading the race but broke his fork on the Tourmalet.  He had to walk his bicycle down to the nearest village and find a blacksmith where he could repair his front fork.  He successfully fixed his bike but lost his huge lead to the other racers.
