You might need a cup of coffee once you've reached the top, as temperatures can be vastly lower; as well as very windy and chilly! Mont Ventoux is known as the "Geant de Provence" or "Giant of Provence".  It stands out as an imposing mountain that towers over the beautiful Provence countryside.  At the summit wind speeds have been recorded as high as 320 kmh (200 mph)!  It is rated as HC or hors categorie and there are three ways to reach the summit.  From Bedoin it is 21.8 km with an average gradient of 7.5%.  It first appeared in the TdF in 1951.  Charly Gaul set the climbing record from Bedoin in 1958 that would stand until 2013 when it was broken by Laurens ten Dam.  Near the summit there is a memorial to the British cyclist Tom Simpson who passed away during the race in 1967.  In 2021 it was featured as a climb twice in the same day on stage 11!  Julian Alaphilippe and Wout van Aert battled it out on both climbs for race leader making for an epic day of TdF racing!  Mont Ventoux is considered a must-do by cycling afficionados due to the incomparable beauty of Provence which is contrasted by the stark lunar landscape as you climb ever higher.  Once at the top, you are rewarded with unparalleled views of the surrounding countryside.  Careful on the descent!  You can easily reach speeds over 80 kmh (50 mph) with the long straightaways.
